October 5, 2008:
Kevin Burke & Cal Scott
WHFMS is thrilled to open our 37th season with one of the world's truly great Irish fiddlers. Kevin Burke's highly fluid and ornamented Sligo lilt is easily one of the most recognizable sounds in Irish music -- "one of the high spots of the current Irish musical scene," according to The Irish Times. From his early days with the pioneering Bothy Band to his tours with supergroup Patrick Street and the Celtic Fiddle Festival, Kevin is widely respected as both an ensemble player and a dynamic solo performer. He'll be joined by Cal Scott, who plays everything from folk to jazz on bass, brass, guitar and whatever else is handy. A sensitive accompanist, Cal is also a composer, arranger and producer, with many film and television scores to his credit. He frequently incorporates original songs and tunes when performing with Kevin. This is a duo of stunning musical depth and creativity -- you won't want to miss it.
