March 1, 2009: Malinky

MalinkyWHFMS is thrilled to bring this Scottish five-piece band to Community Hall. Malinky specializes in traditional Scottish folksong, with three superb lead vocalists supported by tastefully inventive instrumentation. Formed in 1998, this band exploded on the scene, winning prestigious music awards in their first year. Two original members, Steve Byrne (vocals, bouzouki, guitar) and Mark Dunlop (vocals, whistles, bodhrán), are joined by Fiona Hunter (vocals, cello), Dave Wood (guitar, bouzouki) and Mike Vass (fiddle). With Dunlop hailing from Northern Ireland and Wood from Derbyshire, their respective roots in Ulster song and English tradition add further vibrant layers to Malinky's core Scottish sound. Combining the very best of tradition and modernity, hard-earned experience and revitalized enthusiasm, Malinky is entering its second decade with the world increasingly at the band's feet. And the accolades continue: the Boston Globe has just selected their latest album, "Flower & Iron" as one of its Top Picks for 2008. Don't miss this fine young band!
